Gallup & LaFitte, Design-Build was the designer and builder of this custom home in the Timberlake neighborhood. The lot created a couple of unique challenges with slope and a lake view off to one side. We were able to utilize a basement design and angle the house slightly to take advantage of lake views. This home features what we refer to as a “Craftsman-Cottage” design. We incorporated hardiplank siding, stacked stone, composite wrapped columns and beams, metal roofing accents, and a mahogany front door to create an appealing and low maintenance exterior. The front porch has a flagstone floor, stacked stone walls, mahogany front door, and beadboard ceilings.
This home features an open concept floor plan and you are immediately greeted with a large open foyer to great room, kitchen, and dining area. The great room includes a stacked stone wood burning fireplace with reclaimed wood beams used as a mantel piece and open shelving to each side of the fireplace. We collaborated with the homeowner in the foyer to create a tall wainscoting. The main floor and basement are both 9’ ceiling heights but we bumped up the great room to create a more open effect on the main floor, beams were added during the trim stage of construction to provide some definition to the ceiling. We utilized a cottage trim package with its clean lines using flat casing, flat baseboard, and a smooth cove crown molding. The flooring in the living areas of the main floor is #2 White Oak Site finished flooring in 5” width. The #2 denotes the floor having more character with more color variation, knots, and rustic edges.
The kitchen features shaker cabinets by KB Kitchen and Bath. The countertops are marble and are provide by Distinctive surfaces. The hood surround over the range was custom built by Palmetto Custom Woodwork and is made from rustic locally reclaimed barn wood. The backsplash is a clean beveled subway tile provided by the Tile Center. The kitchen opens to an informal dining area and connects to the screen porch through a large sliding door that opens to create a 6’ opening. The screen porch is made from aluminum framing, composite columns, Trex decking, and features a sky blue beadboard ceiling.
The master suite includes transoms above eye level for light and privacy. The master bath flooring is a “wood look” tile and incorporates custom his and hers vanities. There is a large walk in shower and a freestanding tub. There are separate his and hers walk-in closets with custom shelving and cabinetry.
The laundry room, garage entry, and powder room are all connected off of the kitchen. The flooring in this area is a brick paver tile and provide an attractive and durable flooring for this heavy use area. We incorporated an antique cast iron wash sink the owner provided in the laundry room and we designed room for a second fridge into the space as well. We built a landing nook into the garage entry for organization of the kids school materials, jackets, keys, and other daily commute items.
The bonus room over the garage takes advantage of the space well as we dropped the ceiling in the garage to create a taller ceiling in the frog. The frog in this home is a utilized as a fourth bedroom with a full bath and large closet. We insulated and air sealed the kneewalls in the attic with a ridged air barrier and foamed and taped all seams for maximum performance of this space.
Going down to the lake level we like to design our basements with what we call a reverse foyer (above). This concept uses two sets of large 4’ wide steps that turns on a landing and incorporates trim detail like wainscoting and craftsman railing, once you reach the lake level we utilize a glass door to better connect the two spaces. In the lake level we utilized LVP flooring from Builders Wholesale Flooring. The flooring provides a durable and cost effective solution for the basement flooring. The lake level basement includes two bedrooms, a full bath with tile floor and tile bath tub walls, and two large storage areas in the below grade spaces towards the front of the home. There is a walkout patio made from pavers that steps out towards the lake from the home.
