RSU transformed the 1940’s Melrose Heights home built by the client’s parents into an updated, open and welcoming space perfect for comfortable living and gracious entertaining. The original charm and character of the home was preserved while modern ideas of design and space planning were incorporated. The end result is a home that maintains the integrity of the original structure and suits a lifestyle for today.
The small galley kitchen was enlarged and re-imagined by taking down the walls of the adjacent cramped breakfast nook, laundry closet, and the den. Every part of the kitchen is designed to suit the lifestyle, taste and the needs of the owners. The expansive island in the shape of a grand piano echoes the client’s love of music and makes the perfect location for the down draft cook top and bar height seating. The whimsical chandelier above the island bespeaks the owners’ love of the unique and exceptional.
The built in desk area provides the perfect location for organizing recipes. The once awkward triangular area under the stairs was custom built with artistic triangular glass cabinets to create a charming coffee bar with real personality. There is even a slender cabinet by the back door to hold keys and the dog leashes. French doors introduce more natural light into the space and provide a gracious exit onto the back deck with a beautiful cedar pergola. The dogs can play with reckless abandon in the yard with a new brick and metal picket fence. The new kitchen is an elegant space beautifully designed for living, entertaining and enjoying.
The small master bedroom with an ordinary bath that serviced the whole downstairs was reimagined. A seldom used sitting room provided the space to create a powder room for guests, spacious master closet with the laundry room in it, and a luxurious bathroom. With two lavatories, a bidet and lots of cabinets the bathroom is perfectly suited for two people. It also features a large curb less shower with linear drain, multiple shower heads. The stylish large scale shiplap tile work completes the design. No hard-to-keep-clean glass is needed as the whole bathroom has been waterproofed. The result is easy to maintain elegance.
New Master Bath:
New Half Bath Downstairs:
The upstairs was a rabbit warren of small oddly shaped spaces with no unity. All of the walls between the rooms except the bath were removed. The ceiling was vaulted to create an open loft feel. The tight walls at the staircase were replaced with open railing to open the space up further. The result is the perfect large, open living and bedroom space to make their son feel comfortable when he is home from college.
New upstairs apartment:
The living room, dining room and sun room were freshened and brightened. The small brick fireplace was replaced with a craftsman style mantle and leathered granite.
The living room is now washed in natural light by opening up the doorway into the sunroom. The dining room features a beautiful ceiling medallion with a dramatic chandelier. The three rooms are harmonized with colors that allow the clients whimsical art collection to really stand out.
A charming home steeped in the history of a family was master planned and reimagined to suit the owners changing needs. The now open and spacious rooms are ready for comfortable daily living as well as elegant entertaining. This lovely home full of generations of fond memories is ready to provide the setting for decades to come.
